Cotton

Agronomy

Agronomic management is key to successful cotton production in Pakistan. Farmer’s decisions must consider adaptability and maturity of the seed varieties selected specific regions and management system to secure yield and profitability. The variety selection should be based on sol type, planting time, and characteristics of soil and climate encountered in previous years or forecasted for current year. Agronomic management decisions and strategy must be designed according to specific situation must include the following goals:

  1. Promote strong emergence and healthy uniform stand for maximum early season growth.
  2. Fill gaps by transplanting seedlings where plants are in excess into areas where seeds did not germinate.
  3. Cotton is sensitive to excessive or less irrigation and must be applied at right timing depending upon the system of irrigation.
  4. Use recommended agronomic practices to promote early vegetative growth and flowering. Delayed flowering can predispose crop to biotic and abiotic stressors (pests and diseases)
  5. Prevent excessive vegetative growth during and after flowerings to avoid delay in maturity and/or increase in insect pest damage or diseases.
  6. To protect yield of cotton, decisions on weed, insect, and disease management must be made in timely manner. Effective pest management depends on pest scouting, timely application with appropriate method of pesticide delivery.
  7. Harvest of cotton at the right time will ensure the yield and quality for profitability. Delayed harvest could result in yield losses and poor fibre quality.
