Severe Weather Management

Climate change is becoming a major threat in cotton production in Pakistan. Excessive hot weather combined with excessive drought or untimely rains and cause increased pest problems, poor pollination leading to yield losses and poor fiber quality. The following management practices can be helpful in preparing for severe weather for cotton Production:

  • Traditional farm management system should be complimented with advance technologies such as smart phones, access to Satellite based weather information system, and other decision support systems for severe weather management.
  • Selection of varieties for cultivation in specific region that have the are heat tolerant and water stress tolerant. Consider short season cultivars that have less exposure to harsh weather.
  • Supply adequate macro- and micronutrients to facilitate better nutrient utilization by crop.
  • Monitor the threat of emergence of new pests due to climate change and resistance management issues.
  • Adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for crop management and production.
  • Based on records of weather data and personal experience of previous years, minimize the risk by adjusting the sowing time or moving to relatively safer location.
  • Total water management is essential for cotton production, including irrigation and drainage systems, and must take into account the water table and soil drainage.
  • If the crop has reached maturity, harvest the fields most vulnerable to flooding or restricted access, and/or the fields that are most mature.
