Seed Quality: Selection of high-quality seed of varieties that are adapted to farm, climatic conditions, management is highly critical for farmer to achieve yield and quality needed for profitable cotton production. High quality seeds have high percentage and the seed must have ability to produce a normal, health seedling under optimal conditions. Standard germination tests are done under ideal temperature. Seed vigor is the ability of seed to produce healthy seedlings in less than ideal conditions (Cooler temperature).
Seed Size: Small size seeds don’t germinate under sub-optimal conditions such as deep planting, soil crusting, and cool wet conditions. Seed size is printed on the bag or can be calculated by information on the bag.
Seed Treatment: Planting cotton seed with a treatment of protective and systemic fungicides can maximize emergence of health seedlings. Farmer should always prefer to plant cotton seed with treatment. For more information, refer to Disease management section.
Seed variety selection is very important decision at the start of planting season and depends on factors such as soil type, planting date, crop maturity, and fiber quality. Official variety testing data must be reviewed before making decisions of seed varieties for planting. Most cotton varieties in Pakistan are genetically modified (GM) to have an insect control protection and called as Bt varieties. Conventional as well as Bt varieties approved for planting are presented in the following Table:
