Weed Management

Weed management is critical for cotton production because weed population can reduce the cotton yield and lint quality. First 8 weeks of weed free cotton is required for good yield; 95% weed control during the season will produce maximum yield and best quality of cotton harvest.

A burndown program can be used in field with heavy winter weeds. It is recommended to survey field in fall and to record weeds, location, and population. Herbicide (weedicides) program must be planned ahead for expected weeds species because the weeds present during previous year will become problem during the crop season.

During the season, first 8 weeks are critical, and thus fields must be checked weekly basis for any need post emergence weed control. Proper weed identification is important because different weed species require specific herbicides for effective weed control.

Always use maintenance chemicals that are labeled for use on cotton and follow the instructions on the label for proper application. Please refer to the Crop management section for list of labeled herbicides and recommended rates control of specific weed species.
